The first of the
3 Fatal Fury games for the Sega Saturn by SNK but how is it? Well after
the excellent King Of Fighters '96 also by SNK
I was expecting something special from this one. Now I know that
expecting something to be good is a bad idea. Garou Densetsu 3 or Fatal
Fury 3 as it's known in English is probably one of the worst 2D fighters
on the Saturn. Now whist you may think this isn't such a big deal it
actually is. You see 2D fighters programmed by far lesser talented
software houses are miles better than this and considering that KOF
'96 was excellent what the hell went wrong?
Well, could it be because Sims had a hand in the development of this
game? most likely to tell the truth.
Fatal Fury 3 does have a bit less animation than the Neo Geo original
which is expected since the Saturn has less memory
plus Fatal Fury 3 doesn't use any memory expansion carts. The
speech samples are also muffled which again is down to memory
restrictions and again is excusable. What's not excusable however is the
poor frame rate that this game runs at. It's as if
this was purposely made crap to please the NEO GEO Fan boys. This
probably isn't true but it sure looks that way. The whole game has a
terrible jerky look to it. Not only the character animation and movement
of the characters but also the menu screens scroll in a jerky fashion.
All this leads to a pretty poor conversion but wait, it gets far worse!!
The loading times are a joke! We're talking PlayStation speed here!! We
all know that the Saturn is capable of fast loading times as Capcom's 2D
fighters that don't support the RAM carts have shown but this game is a
joke. It loads EVERYTHING ! Yes, even the messages after a battle have
to load making you wait about 7 seconds. The loading wouldn't be so bad
if it was just between rounds but as it is it becomes
rather annoying. At least it's quicker than
the Neo CD but still very bad for a Saturn.
Over all Garou Densetsu 3 (Fatal Fury 3) on the Saturn is a poor
conversion indeed.
