Nobody innovates the way games are played more
than Sega. NiGHTS is another example of what made Sega stand above the
rest in terms of game quality. Produced by Yuji Naka's Sonic Team,
NiGHTS was the sole reason behind the release of the Saturn's analogue
controller (well that and the fact the N64 had one).
So what is NiGHTS? Hmm, well it's hard to explain really. It's not a
shooter, a platformer, a fighting game or a strategy game. So what is it
then? Well let me explain how it plays. There is a choice of two
character, Eliot or Claris who have dreams. The game you play is their
dream. In the dream you must guide the character that you have chosen to
the main check point. From there you will change in to the character,
NiGHTS. Now NiGHTS must collect silver blue orbs by flying around the
area. Once you have enough orbs you can then drop them off at the check
point to open up new parts of the level. It all sounds pretty dull
doesn't it? Well, in truth it does sound dull, but it's what you must do
to collect the orbs that really brings out the fun. You see, NiGHTS can
perform all manner of Arial tricks which can be used to attack enemies,
collect orbs or even access secret areas. The use of the analogue pad is
a must for the fluid feeling. Playing on the standard Saturn pad just
isn't as fun. There are six levels in total, all as magical as each
other. My personal favorite is the Soft Museum stage. The whole area
bends under you as you fly past.
The music in NiGHTS is also very special with the way it alters in real
time depending upon how well you are doing in the game. NiGHTS unique AI
feature that was later added to Sonic Team's Dreamcast Sonic Adventure
games in the Chao Garden is also a very novel feature that will keep
your attention for ages while you watch your little A-Life guys evolve.
Go and get yourself a copy of NiGHTS with the analogue pad right now !
You won't regret it.
