Gungriffon has
got to be one of the best Mech shooters if not the best Mech shooter on
any system of it's time. Game Arts present us with Mechs that are so
solid looking that you actually feel the weight as you pilot them around
the battle fields. At first Gungriffon may seem a bit of a chore to play
due to the complex nature of the control system but once you've got that
sorted in the exercise mode you'll be in for a
real treat.
The areas that you play in range from good visibility to the dead of
night and lets not forget to mention that they are huge. Some areas are
totally stunning such as the areas set at dusk. There's just something
about seeing a massive spider like Mech climb over a hill towards you at
dusk or emerge from the snowy distance.
So as you've probably guessed Gungriffon is certainly one of the
Saturn's eye candy titles but how does it play? Well as I mentioned
above the Mechs look heavy and control in such a way that it actually
makes you think you are piloting a real Mech.
The missions range from short and easy to full on battles. It's hard to
fault Gungriffon in any aspect really. Oh, I mustn't forget to mention
the great opening movie. The whole thing is presented using True Motion
and has got to be some of the cleanest video ever
seen on a Saturn game. But that's not all. Play the game on a
Saturn with a MPEG Video card and you'll be presented with a full screen
version of the opening movie in glorious high quality
MPEG.
