The giant Mechs are back in the follow up to the amazing Game Arts Gungriffon. The second game is just as great as the first as far as playability goes. It even has a 4 player option to play a "Live" game using two Saturn's connected together via the serial link. Other modes include the standard scenario mode plus a random 1 player mode. There are also various methods of controlling your Mech. Of course there's the standard 1 pad method as in the first game or you could use the Saturn Mission Stick or even better, the Virtual On Twin Sticks. There's even a two player mode using two control pads for one Mech. I haven't tried it yet but it seems to be that one person controls the Mech's directions while the other controls the weapons. This sound like it could be fun. Just a shame none of my friends like Mech games so I can't try it out (-_-).

So Gungriffon II has some very interesting control options, plus link up ability but that's where the plus points over the first game end. It seems to me that Game Arts or ESP (since they had their hand in the second release) either had a low budget, no time or just couldn't be bothered as much with Gungriffon II since the game was released near the end of the Saturn's life span in 1998. The overall look of the game seems rougher than the 1st plus there is no cool CG intro like the first game which also supported the MPEG video card. If you have the first Gungriffon you will be disappointed that the second is not as pretty but at least it's still a great game to play.
