We all know that the Saturn got a bad wrap for first person style games from the world's gaming press thanks to that utter crap port of Doom. Thankfully Lobotomy Software proved to use all that the Saturn could bring it's fans a fast and smooth first person action game with Exhumed or Seireki 1999 Pharaoh no Fukkatsu as it's known in Japan. After that came the fantastic port of Quake, again thanks to those very talented guys at Lobotomy. Then we heard that Probe Entertainment were going to bring us Hexen. Could it be as silky smooth as Lobotomy's games or would it be a steaming heap of crap like Rage's Doom port? Actually, neither. Saturn Hexen while not silky smooth is still quite playable. Probe have done a decent job at porting this game to the Saturn. True, Lobotomy probably could have done it better but as it stands it's not all that bad.

Over the PC original this Saturn version has a lovely CG intro explaining the story behind Hexen in detail as well as some very nice red book CD audio tracks to accompany the action. Of course the PC version of the game does have the benefit of mouse controls which is something the Saturn port is missing. Not sure why though since the Saturn does have a mouse. Still, analogue fans will be happy to know that Saturn Hexen is fully 3D analogue controller compatible.
