It's the 21st century were
police no longer use conventional weapons. Instead they are armed with
gigantic mech suits in order to take out the evil mech monsters from out
of space. Pretty much like most mech based anime then I guess. Our main
heroin was on her way to school when suddenly she finds herself in the
middle of a mech battle. Being an everyday event for her (as in most
anime like this) she quickly takes control of a fallen mech and engages
in combat. While the battle is taking place 3 mysterious females take
watch. Who could they be? You'll have to play the game to find out I'm
afraid.
When I first put this game on I had to check inside my Saturn to make
sure that I hadn't left the Video CD MPEG card in. Then I noticed that
this game uses True Motion video so it wouldn't matter anyway. What I'm
trying to say is that Back Guiner has some of the most incredibly clean
FMV ever seen on the Saturn. You could be watching it on a Dreamcast and
still be amazed.
The game is an isometric Mech battle simulation using video clips for
the attack sequences and story. The actual main graphics look decent in
the battle areas but could have done with a little more work I think.
Still, they certainly do their job well enough. The battle commands are
easy to work out despite being in Japanese so even someone with no
knowledge of the language could play this game as long as the don't mind
missing out on the story. However they may want to pass since there's an
awful lot of Japanese text uses in the "adventure" sections of the game.
In order to understand the plot of the game it's necessary to read
these.
Fantastic looking video coupled with a decent mech battle simulation
makes Back Guiner a worthy purchase. Think of it as an interactive
animation and as it's by VING you know it's going to be worth it.
Below you can see the front and back of the mini calendar card that
comes with the game.
