I have never been a fan of Electronic Arts
Sports games mainly because they are all based upon American sports
apart from Fifa which in the days of the Saturn and before was a load of
crap compared to the like of Winning Eleven.
Anyway, here comes PGA '97, a golf game. "Great!" I thought since I'm
quite fond of golf games if done correctly. Anyway, my hopes were
boosted as I started the game. Everything runs in the Saturn's high
resolution but being Electronic Arts, their idea of high resolution is
to use low resolution graphics while displaying them in high resolution.
Needless to say this looks a bit on the messy side unlike the super
crisp images you get from other companies. Anyway, at least they made
the effort to present the game in a high resolution. So through the
options I go setting everything up without much of a problem. Then came
the game. Club set, stance set, hit the ball and then err...wait. Yes,
the pause between you hitting the ball then actually having the player
on screen hit it is far too long. Must be at least 4 seconds. While this
doesn't sound so long it will become very irritating. Still, as long as
you're getting a good game of golf you may be able to let this waiting
pass. Sadly PGA '97 plays like a load of crap. One of the main problems
is the power gauge. At times the bar sliding up and down the gauge jerks
putting you right off. How on earth are you meant to do an accurate shot
when you can't even judge the power gauge due to jerky movement. Another
problem is that the ball just doesn't travel as far as the power gauge
suggests. This makes doing close shots a bloody nightmare ! You never
know how much power to put in to the shot since the ball seems to have a
will of it's own.
Pretty awful golf game but what did you expect from EA? I've never
played the PlayStation version but it wouldn't surprise me if it was
just the same yet still got high praise. If it's golf you want on the
Saturn then get anything over this crap.
