As you may or may not know, Jaleco are not the
greatest game makes in the world. In fact I'm surprised they lasted as
long as they did. Probably their best Saturn games would be the Suchie
Pai series which to be honest are very good but then there are the other
Jaleco games such as GT24 which are pretty bad. So how does Ninja
Jajamaru-kun fair against the other Saturn games release in 1998? Hmm,
well it's an action game which is a thumbs up right away plus Jaleco
have made it in 3D which as we know is a brave step on the Saturn for
such a poorly skilled company.
Ninja Jajamaru-kun mostly comprises of 3D platform sections which do
look ok for the most part although the controls are not to my liking due
to the 4 way movement plus the camera is too slow leaving you to move it
manually while playing. It's not all bad news though, the audio is quite
nice with some catchy tunes plus there's a bonus game! Yep, every now
and then you are rewarded with levels from the original 80's Version of
Ninja Jajamaru-kun that you can play through between the levels of the
normal game. Sort of like a bonus round.
So, Ninja Jajamaru-kun doesn't look that great and the controls are a
bit restrained but it's still not that bad. The main problem however is
that as big as the game is (11 Areas) I still managed to finish it on my
2nd go thanks to the save point options. This is a real shame because
the whole game is very well presented with great attention to detail
being put in to the area map and bonus games. Even the loading screens
are entertaining. Now if only Jaleco did the same for the actual in-game
levels. A nice enough game that is quite hard to find these days but
only worth getting if you really need something rare-ish for a decent
price.
