What a fantastic idea this game
is. Mix an adventure sim with a racing game ! Yes, Code R is one of
those typical Japanese adventure games which many people seem to mistake
as all being love simulations, but with the added bonus of a racing game
thrown in. Think Initial D in adventure game format. In Code R you play
as an ESSO petrol station employee (Initial D ?) who is out to find the
love of his life. What better way to impress a girl than by showing her
what a cool driver you are !
The graphics in the story mode of this game are all presented in the
Saturn's highest resolution and as far as I know this is the only
adventure game to do so ! The end result is stunning but it doesn't stop
there. The racing sections also run in a higher resolution to what most
Saturn racing games run in. I'd say it's on par with Daytona Circuit
edition as far as resolution goes plus has a very nice headlight effect
due to all the races taking place at night. Frame rate is a rock steady
30fps whilst using the in-car view but can slowdown pretty badly if you
choose the overhead view. Still, a real gamer wouldn't be using the
overhead view anyway.
As in all racing games you are able to customize your car settings such
as transmission, suspension, breaks and so on. There are also 3 methods
of control being the normal Saturn pad, analogue controller or the
racing wheel. I found the analogue controller to be best with the wheel
being the worst. The standard pad is ok but you really would be better
off using the analogue controller.
Now, you are probably wanting to know if you can play the racing
sections without having to go through all those story sections. Well,
the answer is yes you can! There are 3 modes available from the start
including the story mode, training mode and the battle mode. Over all
Code R as a stand alone racer isn't the best out there but I will say
it's far better than an awful lot of the Saturn racers. Well worth
checking out even if it's just for the beautiful graphics alone.
