What’s
this? A Saturn game with MPEG video without the use of an MPEG card?
Yes, Vatlva features a nice anime intro encoded in MPEG SOFDEC, which is
the same codec that many Dreamcast games use. The intro quality looks
beautiful running on a Standard Saturn but is unfortunately boxed. Add
an MPEG card however and that boxed image becomes full screen !!
Anyway, enough about the intro (^_^) Let’s get on to the actual game.
Vatlva is one of those party type games, you know, the ones where you
battle it out against a few mates after downing a few pints. Choose a
vehicle, load it up with weapons, select a course then battle it out!
Pretty simple really.
The selection of vehicles is wide enough to cover most people’s needs.
Graphically the game is quite nice with detailed backgrounds that zoom
in and out as the action gets more intense. Oh and the whole thing runs
in the Saturn’s high resolution as well.
The version of Vatlva that I have came with a batch
of other Saturn games which were all normal retail games apart from this
one. As you can see the disc has SAMPLE printed around the inner ring.
