Ving have brought yet another classic Taito shooter (the other being Elevator Action Returns) to the Saturn fans. Metal Black is one of those Darius type shooters in the way that everything seems to be some form of mutated sea creature. One interesting point about Metal Black is the way your weapon is powered up. Throughout most of the stage there is what looks like DNA strands floating about. These must be picked up to power up you weapon. No DNA pick up results in a very weak, slow firing pea shooter. There's also another factor to consider about the weapon. The more you use it the sooner the power will run out of power. This means that you are constantly on the look out for new DNA strands to power up your weapon. Oh and let's not forget that this also effects your power blast bomb type weapon as well. Now, I know that this may sound all too much trouble to bother with but it's not really that much of a bother.

Graphically the game does look dated in parts due to the artistic style used. Thankfully it still plays quite well and let's not forget that cool Zuntata soundtrack.

Overall Metal Black is a worthy blaster for your money that should keep you going for quite some time. The version pictured above is the original release but there's also the Satkore re-released version which is the same game but comes with a white boarder around the cover.
