If you've seen the Retro Core Sega Saturn
Shooting Special then you'll know that Planet Joker is possibly the
worst shooter on the Saturn. What makes it so bad? Well for a start the
graphics while in 3D are pretty bad. Blocky looking ships, dull level
designs plus a very bad prospective that makes judging distance quite a
challenge at times. “But surely just because this game looks bad in
almost ever respect doesn't make it a bad game” you may be saying and
yes, you're right. Graphics don't make a game good but they do help it
along the way.
What really kills Planet Joker is a number of things. We've already
talked about. The BGM is ok I guess but what really kills the audio are
the sound effects or lack of them. Your mechs weapons sound so weak it's
unbelievable and the sound of explosions is pathetic. One of my farts
sound more threatening!! The real nail in the coffin for this game
though is the playability. It's just so dull and frustrating. The
weapons that your Mech fires don't even come out of it's gun half the
time but from the side of it making a critical hit judgment almost
impossible. The collision detection is also way off in places resulting
in you getting hit even though you aren't near the bullet.
After slagging this game pretty rotten I must say that I can see some
pretty nice ideas in Planet Joker such as the battle up the side of a
building or battling two giant spider robots. The anime cut scenes are
also quite nice but the problem is that the whole game is just badly put
together. Maybe if Naxat had some better programmers, artists and sound
designers then Planet Joker may have been good but as it is it's just
what the title suggests, a joke. Still, it's one of those games that is
so crap you'll play just to see how crap it becomes. If you can find
this cheap enough then give it a shot. You never know, you may like it
in a crappy kind of way.
