If you've always wanted a Gradius game for your Mega Drive then this could be the one, or could have been the one if it wasn't so bloody awful.  From Stage one it's clear that this game was heavily influenced by Konami's Gradius series.  The first stage is resembles the volcano stages in Gradius games quite remarkably.  All bosses in the game are also variants of Gradius bosses.  Actually, the first level boss which you can see on the cover scan is quite impressive to be honest.  The option's  that fly around your craft act just like they do in Gradius although you can only have up to two in this game plus the weapon system is quite similar.

The biggest problem with this game is well, pretty much everything.  For a start enemy craft can fly through foreground objects making them invisible to your attack yet when you try to fly through the object you die.  Ground enemies are invisible for a second as the appear on to the screen.  Enemy patterns are either very dull or just complete bat shit insane giving you no chance to know where they came from.  The music is dull.  The graphics apart from the bosses are pretty poor plus the bullets blend in to the backgrounds too much.

Yes, XDR is a pretty awful game that had so much potential.
