Senjou no Ookami II or Mercs as it was called in English, is the official sequel to Capcom’s Commando. This Mega Drive conversion by Sega is extremely close to the original arcade. Of course everything is scaled down some what but the mayhem and excitement of the original arcade is still in there. Sega really have done an excellent job in porting this game to the Mega Drive. Graphic detail is very high reproducing the arcade look very well. The audio is also well done and dare I say even better than the arcade original. Sega didn’t stop with just an arcade conversion of Senjou No Ookami II though. Oh no. Mega Drive fans can enjoy the Original Mode! Exclusive to the Mega Drive, this mode adds very slight “RPG” elements to the game. Within the original mode you can buy upgrades for your weapons, extra life, bombs and so on from the stores dotted throughout the game. Not only do you have the ability to upgrade your weapons but also your co-fighters as well. Yes, that's right. In the original mode you are joined by other mercenaries each time you visit a store. Each mercenary has their own ability such as laser fire or flame thrower. So choosing the correct player at the right time is essential in some situations. The original mode with it's all new levels and soundtrack really make Senjou no Ookami II a definite purchase even if you already own the pretty much arcade perfect version featured on the Sega Saturn's Capcom Generation 4 collection. You'd be nuts to pass this one up. |
