The Mega Drive is home to many shooters which makes any new comer finding it tough to fit in. Asmik seemed to have suffered this. Verytex looks like it could have been something special however it isn't. You can see the ideas that Asmik had with their lovely big sprites, pretty interesting bosses and most of all the quite solid game engine. Verytex can become quite busy at times yet there isn't much of a slowdown problem if any most of the time. Verytex's BGM is also pretty cool however the sound effects are identical to those used in Data East's Midnight Resistance ! Either the sound designer for both games is the same or Asmik bought the sound engine. Needless to say that the sound effects in Verytex seem most out of place. The main problems I find with Verytex are the graphics. The game is pretty much part of the "beaten with the ugly stick" family. In many sections of the game it's also pretty hard to distinguish the enemy ships from the back ground due to the murky colours used. Overall, Verytex isn't a bad game but with many other quality shooters available on the Mega Drive it may be in your interest to check them out before this release. |
