After the pretty good Golden Axe II, I was expecting some great things from Golden Axe III. How wrong I was. First impressions aren't that bad to be honest. True that the background graphics don't look great but your main character looks much beefier than the 2nd game. This is a short lived plus point mind you. You'll soon notice that through out each level you fight the same TWO bad guys (Stan and Laurel I call them) with the odd extra character throwin in, who you will from then on also be fighting on every level. It's pathetic really. I know that in Golden Axe II a lot of the same characters appeared on different stages but in this game they don't even try to hide it. It's just the same two time after time. Well, they do change the colours of Stan and Laurel with some being really disgusting. Full on gold or purple characters, anyone? There are a few redeeming features in the game however. Each character has quite a few special moves at their disposal which adds to the variety of the game play plus there are actually some pretty decent tunes in there as well. Unfortunately these don't really help the long drawn out mundane task of playing through the game. Some nice ideas in Golden Axe III but over all it just screams cheap slapped together crap. |
