Maker - Sega   Catalogue No. - G-4018

Type - Action

One of the biggest classic arcade games ever has never been ported to a home console in it's arcade perfect form which is a great shame.  This Mega Drive version however isn't all that bad even though it does look a little dated these days.  All 3 characters are present as well as the most important feature, simultaneous two player mode.  There are also a few extra modes such as the beginner mode which is a cut down version of the arcade mode and the one on one duel mode.

As I said the game does look dated mainly due to it's small weedy character sprites yet the backgrounds while looking dated as well, do look better than the characters.  The audio follows the arcade pretty closely with fitting tunes however the sound effects are lacking a bit.

Overall Golden Axe is a decent walk along slash 'em up but if you must get a Golden Axe game for your Mega Drive I'd go with Golden Axe 2 if I was you unless you really must have the original version.
