Now some of you may know that
I’ve never really been a fan of Treasure unlike some of the over hype
publications out there. I never though Guardian Heroes was anything
special on the Saturn nor did I think it pushed the machine in any way.
I never really thought Radiant Silvergun or Ikuraga were anything more
than over the top weapon or tactic based shooters. Bangaioh and Yuke
Yuke Troublemakers? Well…. They were fun but again nothing like the
reviewers made them out to be. Please understand that I’m not saying the
aforementioned games are poor, just that they don’t live up to the hype
or at least to me they don’t. In fact to be honest I think the only
Treasure game I ever really liked was Gunstar Heroes on the Mega Drive.
So isn’t it funny that the only other Treasure game that I really enjoy
is also on the Mega Drive?
Enter Dynamite Headdy. I must confess that the first time I looked at
this game I thought it was mighty confusing. That was until I picked up
the pad and started to play that is. Dynamite Headdy is one of those
platform games that just oozes ideas. The entire bases of the game is
unique with the main character, Headdy being a puppet in a puppet world
with all the stages actually being part of a stage set. Headdy can
select a variety of different heads to help him through his adventure
and while this may not be anything too inventive it’s certainly a nice
touch.
Graphically Dynamite Headdy is very nice with loads of colour and some
pretty nice graphical effects such as sprite rotation and scaling. The
audio is also quite nice with catchy tunes and loads of speech, some of
which is actually very clear!
If there was one thing I’d have to put Dynamite Headdy down on that
would be the amount of bloody bosses in it. As you may know, Treasure
have always been ones for sticking in bosses mid level. They probably do
this to save of thinking up a stage design (^o^). Still, that’s just a
minor grumble. Over all Dynamite Heady is one Mega Drive cartridge that
everyone should consider checking out.
