Ooh, look ! It's another "Game Creative Staff......Wolfteam" game (^v^). Wolfteam practically kept the Mega CD alive in Japan with the amount of games they released for it. Unfortunately, some of Wolfteam's games are quite an acquired taste most of the time while the others are pretty much cack. Devastator sort of falls in to the middle of the realm of Wolfteam games. It's not really crap and it's not really an acquired taste. At first glance the game looks quite nice thanks to it's anime introduction. Then the first level starts. Oh no....... is the phase that comes to mind as you try to figure out why you can't walk and shoot at the same time or why the graphics look no better than Wolfteam's early Mega Drive games. The first level alone is enough to put people off playing Devastator any further. But for some reason I felt compelled to continue. Level two came and again I controlled my Mech in the same manner by not being able to shoot and walk at the same time. Luckily level two contained more exploring and platforms unlike level one which is a perfectly straight run. So the can't shoot and walk at the same time thing doesn't really bother you that much. Ok, level two completed and another cool anime cut scene that seems to have nothing at all in common with the level that follows it. Hang on.....this walk along platform shooter has turned in to a real 2D horizontal side scrolling shooter with quite tasty graphics !! "At last" I though . After completing level three I thought maybe the rest of the game is going to be a real shooter now. Unfortunately it was back to the platform Mech shooting sections. Still they do improve the more you play. There are more side scrolling shooting sections on later levels though. I can't help but feel that if Wolfteam had made this in to a normal shooter then they may have just had a contender for the best Mega CD shooting game out there. The music is perfect for the shooting sections. Graphics are also nice with some nice parallax scrolling with beautiful use of colour. But as it is Devastator is a mix bag indeed. I quite like it after playing it for quite a while. At first I thought it was pathetic but I urge to give it a try until level three at least.
