Not officially licensed by Sega but certainly good enough to be an official game. Last Hope comes to the Dreamcast from N.G. Dev Team who produced the original Neo Geo version. The Neo Geo version of Last Hope was criticized for being far too tough. Thankfully this Dreamcast version has been given level settings as well as the ability to increase your lives. There are also two modes being the Dreamcast mode (allows you to be hit 3 times before death) and the original Neo Geo mode (1 hit equals instant death). Graphics in Last Hope are quite impressive with this Dreamcast version featuring alpha blending lighting effects. Playability wise is sort of a cross between R-Type and Last Resort (Neo Geo shooter). Your ship is equipped with a pod that you can rotate around your ship to absorb on coming bullets a well as using it to fire at difficult to reach targets. To be honest, if you don't use the pod wisely you're going to find this game a real struggle. Actually even with it you'll find that it's a real struggle. One major problem I find though is the lack of restart points, especially if you die on the end of level boss. Last Hope is by no means the greatest shooter on the Dreamcast but as far as home brew games go it's mighty impressive. Not a game for all but if you are the type of person who lives old school rock solid shooters then this is one for you. |
