You may have read on the Celsior
page about Toyota asking Sega to produce high quality car models. Sega or
CRI of Aero Dancing fame to be more exact took on the challenge. The end
results were that impressive that Toyota asked Sega to produce a disc for
each of their new cards that were to be released in 1999. These discs were
for show room display ONLY meaning that they were never for sale. This
Gaia disc is one of the many discs that were made.
This Gaia disc is far more impressive than the Land Cruiser disc for quite
a few reasons. While the car it’s self isn’t as stylish as the Land
Cruiser or at least in my opinion it isn’t, this disc is still a winner.
There are more options to fiddle with plus you can change the background
which allows for different coloured lighting on the car. It’s also
possible to open the doors and pan the camera right inside the car so you
can see what it looks like from sitting inside. It’s even possible to look
through the sunroof!! Unfortunately the Gaia disc does have pretty bad
analogue controls. The Land Cruiser disc’s analogue controls for panning
the camera are very smooth were as the Gaia disc has only one speed making
it a bit tricky at times to get the exact view that you’d like. Still,
that’s only a small grumble. Also, like the Land Cruiser disc there are
many informative videos about the car as well as the ability to take it
for a test drive.
Technically this is a very impressive bit of polygon modeling. Easily the
best to appear on the Dreamcast and even better than anything I’ve seen on
the Xbox, PS2 and Game Cube. And let’s not forget that this was made in
1999!!! I wonder just what the Dreamcast would be capable of if it lived
on in the main stream instead of the cult machine it is now.
Below you can see some screen shots of the actual polygon models used on
this disc. I’m sure you’ll agree that they are very nice.
